Toyota Motor Corp. is expanding its Tacoma midsize pickup with a new TRD Pro off-road edition.

Due this autumn, the 2017 model TRD Pro is based on the 4-wheel-drive, double-cab, short-bed version of the Tacoma. Toyota says the package aims at “extreme off-roading” enthusiasts.

Off-road features include a heavy-duty suspension with specially tuned by-pass shocks and front springs with a 1-inch lift. The rear suspension includes progressive-rate off-road leaf springs.

The truck is powered by a 3.5-liter direct-injection V-6 engine that produces 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. The powerplant includes both port and direct fuel injection. It also runs in Atkinson cycle, which keeps the intake valves open longer to boost efficiency.

Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual with a clutch start-cancel switch or a 6-speed automatic. Both drivetrains include a part-time 4-wheel-drive system with a transfer case and an electronic limited-slip differential.

The automatic transmission is teamed with a “crawl control” feature that modulates the throttle and brakes on five low-speed settings to help navigate difficult terrain. Wheel spin is controlled by automatically adjusting the throttle and traction control.

Other standard features include a power-steering cooler, class-IV hitch, upgraded alternator and trailer-sway controller. The new TRD Pro Tacoma also is fitted with 16-inch all-terrain Goodyear Wrangler tires and an aluminum front skid plate. As with all Tacoma models, a GoPro camera mount is located on the windshield.

Toyota also offers TRD Pro variants of the Tundra fullsize pickup and 4Runner SUV.
