Toshiba Corp. is introducing a new line of image recognition processors for automotive use. Sample shipments will begin in January.

The new TMPV760 series is designed to support a variety of advanced driver assist functions. They add traffic light recognition and day/night pedestrian recognition to such standard functions as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition and lane departure/lane-keeping assist.

Toshiba says the new chips improve image recognition at night when used with multiple high-definition cameras. They also can construct a 3-D image using input from a monocular camera to detect motionless obstacles on the roadway.

The company anticipates beginning mass production of the new chip series by the end of 2016.
