Toronto Asks Court to Shut Down Uber Car-Share Service

Toronto is the latest city to ask a court to shut down Uber Technologies Inc., the San Francisco-based mobile car-booking service, Bloomberg News reports.

Uber has been operating in Toronto for two years. The Canadian city says the service poses a "serious risk" to the public because Uber's independently contracted drivers aren't adequately trained, don't have to submit to vehicle inspections and lack proper insurance to carry passengers.

Toronto also notes that customers, who are accustomed to fixed rates for taxis, are surprised that Uber charges can vary significantly according to demand. Oddly, the city further contends that an expanding Uber service would mean more traffic congestion.

Uber tells Bloomberg it hopes to meet with Toronto officials to develop a "common-sense approach" to regulations that would ensure public safety while allowing competition and more transportation choices for travelers.
