Ford Motor Co.’s sales and service unit in Thailand has been ordered to compensate 291 car owners a combined $23 million baht ($989 million) for a troublesome transmission.
The South Bangkok Civil Court also ordered the Ford subsidiary to a 7.5% annual interest rate on reimbursements to owners who paid for repairs. And it directed the unit to pay plaintiffs’ attorneys a total of 950,000 baht ($29,400) in fees, the Bangkok Post reports.
The case is one of the first to be granted class action status under revised civil law in Thailand. The complaints address reported operational issues with 6-speed, dual-clutch Powershift transmissions in 2011 model Ford Fiesta and Focus small cars.
The Post notes that more than 100 additional owners accepted a Ford settlement before the lawsuit was presented.
