Tesla Motors Inc. is preparing to provide owners of its Model S electric sedan with upgraded charger connectors after several reports that some in-garage chargers could overheat.
The updated adaptor includes a thermal fuse designed to cut off power if overheating is detected. Tesla plans to mail the revised connectors to customers within the next few weeks.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk tells Bloomberg News that overheating is rare and occurs when household wiring "isn't done right."
Last month the company sent a software update to customers that reduces charger power 25% if it senses conditions that could cause overheating. Musk says Tesla hasn't heard of any reports about overheating since it distributed the revised software.
