Tesla Motors Inc. tells Bloomberg News that production of the company's Model S electric sedan has surged well beyond its target rate of 400 units per week.
CEO Elon Musk predicts the California carmaker's EV output will double by the end of 2014. He expects sales of the $69,900 Model S, which totaled only 4,900 units in 2012, to surge to 21,000 vehicles this year.
The company produces its cars in a 5 million-sq-ft factory in Fremont, Calif., previously owned by a General Motors-Toyota joint venture.
Tesla plans to use the Model S platform to carry a second EV, the Model X crossover, due in 2015. Upcoming additions to the lineup are likely to include a less expensive sedan and a smaller crossover.
The company also has said it might eventually develop an all-new version of its first electric, the $109,000 Roadster sports car it sold from 2008 to 2012.
