Tesla Motors Inc. says the lower-priced electric sedan it is developing will retail for $35,000 less than half the price of its current Model S sedan when the new car debuts in 2017.
CEO Elon Musk says the four-door, to be called the Model III, will be the size of a BMW 3 Series sedan and have enough battery power to travel about 200 miles per charge. Media reports speculate Tesla will reveal the car in prototype form in January at the Detroit auto show.
Tesla is preparing to introduce its second electric vehicle, the Model X crossover vehicle, early next year. That model, which features roof-hinged "falcon wing" doors, will share its chassis and price range with the $75,000 Model S.
