Tesla Motors Inc. says it has activated 23 of its electric vehicle quick-charge stations across Europe, up from 14 such facilities in March.

The so-called Supercharger facilities can pump enough energy in 20 minutes to propel one of Tesla's Model S electric sedans about 200 km. Charging is free for the company's customers.

Tesla intends to open at least 30 Supercharger stations in Europe. The resulting network would enable its customers to make trips across the region. In January Tesla completed a similar 71-station system in the U.S. that enables Model S owners to drive along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and from one end of the country to the other without paying for electricity.
