Tesla Motors Inc., which reports its California staff has grown to more than 6,000, is now the state's largest automotive employer, notes Bloomberg News.
Toyota Motor Co. is in second place with about 5,300 employees in California. But that number will begin to drop this summer as the company begins a three-year relocation of its North American headquarters from Torrance to Plano, Tex.
Tesla has been adding workers quickly as it hikes production of its Model S electric sedan in Fremont, Calif. It also is preparing the factory to add the Model X crossover variant late this year and a lower-cost sedan in about 2017.
