Toyota Motor Co. is in second place with about 5,300 employees in California. But that number will begin to drop this summer as the company begins a three-year relocation of its North American headquarters from Torrance to Plano, Tex.
Tesla has been adding workers quickly as it hikes production of its Model S electric sedan in Fremont, Calif. It also is preparing the factory to add the Model X crossover variant late this year and a lower-cost sedan in about 2017.
