The electric Model S sedan from Tesla Motors Inc. has been awarded the best crash rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
NHTSA gave the 4,300-lb car its highest five-star overall rating after the Model S earned five stars in the agency's front crash, side crash and rollover tests.
Tesla's score matches the five-star rating for the Chevrolet Volt extended-range hybrid. The only other pure electrics to complete NHTSA's tests to date are the 2014 Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi i-MiEV. The agency gave each car a four-star overall rating.
