Tata Motors Ltd. says it will rebrand the Zica mini-hatch it plans to unveil this week at the New Delhi auto show because the name sounds like the highly publicized mosquito-borne zika virus.
The original name is short for "zippy car." Tata says it will come up with a new moniker in a few weeks.
Tata is positioning the car, expected to be priced at about 40,000 rupees ($5,900), between its ultra-low-priced Nano and the subcompact Bolt it introduced in 2014. The new model will compete in India with such cars as the Chevrolet Beat, Honda Brio and Maruti Suzuki Celerio.
Tata says the little hatchback will be offered with a 1.2-liter gasoline rated at 84 hp and a 1.1-liter diesel that makes 69 hp. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard.
The four-seater is 12.3 feet (3,746 mm) long, 5.4 feet (1,647 mm) wide and 5 feet (1,535 mm) tall. Equipment and optional features include alloy wheels, smartphone connectivity, 8-speaker audio system, 60:40 split rear folding seats, power windows, frontal airbags, antilock braking, stability control and rear parking sensors.
