Tata Motors Ltd. may debut an all-new SUV as soon as 2018 that shares many components with the company’s Land Rover Discovery Sport SUV.
The new model will feature styling that is “radically different” from the swoopy Discovery Sport, according to India’s Economic Times. But it will ride on the British-built SUV’s L550 platform and mimic that vehicle’s aluminum and steel exterior.
The Indian SUV will be powered by a 2.0-liter, 168-hp diesel and 6-speed manual or automatic transmission, according to ET. The newspaper says the powertrain will be supplied by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV. FCA is expected to use the same system in the small Jeep SUV it will begin producing in India next year.
Tata will position the new SUV above its current Hexa crossover vehicle to compete with such models as the Mahindra XUV 500 and Toyota Fortuner. ET says the vehicle is likely to be priced between 1.7 million and 2.4 million rupees ($25,400-$35,900).
