Today Tata Motors Ltd. is introducing the all-new GenX Nano, an upmarket version of its ultra-low-priced Nano sedan. The company describes the redesigned car as a "make or break" model for the brand.
The original Nano, priced at about $2,300 when it debuted in 2009, was intended as a first step up from a two-wheeler. But the car never approached Tata's original sales targets of as many as 1 million units per year. Tata sold about 17,000 Nanos in 2014.
The company touts the hatchback GenX model as a "smart" city car to compete against such entry-level hatches as the Hyundai Eon and Maruti Suzuki Alto. The company intends to phase out the current Nano.
The GenX is base-priced at $3,100. The car offers an unusually large number of options that include a 5-speed automatic transmission, Bluetooth connectivity, power steering and push-button sport mode. The car features a new instrument panel, more effective air conditioner, a sturdier structure with door beams, quieter interior and seven exterior colors.
The new Nano will be powered by same 624-cc 2-cylinder engine, which is rated at 37 hp and 38 lb-ft of torque.
Tata touts the automatic transmission's "creep" feature, which causes the car to move forward slowly without depressing the accelerator. The company says the characteristic will make the car easier to drive in stop-and-go city traffic.
