Takata Corp. says at least 400,000 of its replacement airbag inflators must be replaced again because they share the same defect with the original units, Reuters reports.
Takata also figures about 500,000 replaced inflators are safe. But the status of 3.1 million other devices replaced over the past several years in multiple recalls by 10 carmakers remains unclear.
The faulty replacement inflators have a batwing shape that Takata is phasing out of production. The company revealed last month that about 34 million vehicles in the U.S. contain inflators that could explode when triggered.
Takata says it will be able by the end of 2015 to supply at least 1 million safe replacement inflators per month 70% of them made by rival airbag makers. Even so, the recall process is expected to take roughly two years to complete.
