Volkswagen AG is recalling about 700 of its 2015 model Audi Q5 and VW Tiguan crossover vehicles in the U.S. because their seat-mounted side impact airbag inflators may explode in a crash.
The callback covers Takata Corp.-supplied side airbags mounted within the outside bolsters of the driver and passenger seatbacks. The airbags deploy between the occupant and door as a cushion during a side impact.
The recall is unusual in that the affected vehicles are only one year old.
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall was prompted by a crash last June, in which the inflator sprayed shrapnel into the cabin and slightly injured the driver’s left arm. VW says a subsequent investigation showed the inflators were part of a batch of devices that had failed a Takata acceptance test.
