Takata Corp. estimates three of its competitors will supply about two-thirds of the replacements for some 34 million Takata airbag inflators being recalled by 11 vehicle makers worldwide.
The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about half the replacement units currently are coming from rivals Autoliv, Daicel and ZF TRW Automotive.
Honda said earlier it will source the 24.5 million inflators it plans to replace from Autoliv and Daicel, Bloomberg notes. It adds that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota are considering or have announced plans to switch at least some of their future Takata orders to other suppliers.
Autoliv and ZF TRW have told NHTSA they could make as many as 15 million and 20 million replacement inflators, respectively, per year.
