Takata Corp. has hired Bruce Angiolillo to become general legal counsel for its TK Holdings Inc. unit in North America.

Angiolillo's top assignment will be to take over the airbag maker's contentious relationship with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and other government agencies. The company's faulty airbag inflators have so far triggered six years of recalls involving 12 carmakers and roughly 24 million vehicles worldwide. Most of the affected cars are in the U.S.

Angiolillo, who will begin his new job on Jan. 1, comes from the New York City-based law firm of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, where he has headed the securities litigation practice. He will succeed Don Schiemann, who is retiring.
