Carmakers have recalled about 29 million Takata Corp. airbag inflators in the U.S., but only 7.5 million have been replaced so far, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
NHTSA has ordered a staged sequence of recalls, beginning with devices in older vehicles located in hot and humid climates. The agency has dictated that all inflator replacements must be completed by the end of 2017.
The recalls cover driver and/or passenger frontal airbag inflators that could explode and spray metal shrapnel into the passenger compartment. The U.S. campaigns, which cover about 170 vehicle models made by 12 vehicle manufacturers, are part of a series of global recalls that have targeted about 50 million cars and trucks worldwide.
