A smoking ignition switch has prompted Suzuki Motor Corp. to expand an earlier recall of cars equipped with ignition switches that may overheat and smoke, Reuters reports.
The campaign began last month with the recall of 168,000 cars in Japan. Now the company is extending the action to include another 1.87 million vehicles in multiple markets, making it the company's largest recall ever.
Reuters says the extended callback involves nine models produced between 1998 and 2009, including vehicles Suzuki makes for General Motors and Mazda. Among the affected models are the Chevrolet Cruze sedan, Suzuki's Swift minicar, Alto city car and Mazda Carol variant, and WagonR mini-MPV and Mazda AZ-Wagon variant.
Most of the vehicles were sold in Japan. But the recall also includes 133,700 Chevy Cruze and Suzuki Alto and Swift cars exported to Europe and Australia.
