Nissan Motor Co. is preparing to call back 319,000 of its 2007-2012 model Versa small sedans in North America to fix front suspension coil springs that could corrode and break, upsetting the car's handling and perhaps puncture a tire.
Nissan, which blames production errors for the defect, plans to begin the recall in November. The campaign follows an investigation launched in May by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration into 93 consumer complaints.
At the time, Nissan said it did not consider the problem a safety issue. The company estimates the likelihood of a spring breaking and puncturing a tire at 0.05%. But it decided a month ago to conduct a regional recall anyway.
Repairs will cover 101,000 Versa models in Canada and 218,000 sold in 22 U.S. "snow belt" states and the District of Columbia.
