Sumitomo Corp.’s European unit has signed an agreement to distribute ultracapacitors produced by Estonia’s Skeleton Technologies GmbH for hybrid and electric vehicle applications.

Skeleton claims its ultracapacitors have twice the energy density and four times the power density of those produced by other companies. Featuring a patented nanoporous “curved-graphene” architecture, Skeleton’s ultracapacitors can be recharged in three seconds or less and have more than one million life cycles.

Ultracapacitors can be used in tandem with lithium-ion batteries in electrified vehicles. The combination can double battery life and allow the user of smaller cells, thereby boosting performance and reducing costs, according to Skeleton.
