Next month Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.'s Subaru unit plans to begin a recall of 633,800 of its 2006-2011 models equipped with "puddle" courtesy light systems that could short circuit and cause a fire.
The campaign will include 2006-2012 Tribeca crossovers, 2009-2012 Forester wagons and 2010-2011 Legacy sedans and Outback wagons.
Affected models were built with four exterior lamps that illuminate the ground in front of each door. Salty road spray could penetrate the system, causing a short circuit that may produce smoke or fire.
Subaru says its dealers will install inline fuses to prevent the system from overheating.
