Subaru Corp. is launching two U.S. recalls to fix faulty fuel gauges and engine valves in nearly 394,200 vehicles.
The fuel gauge campaign targets 228,600 of the company’s 2018 model Legacy sedans and Outback crossover vehicles. Subaru says the system’s low-fuel warning light may not work, and the miles-to-empty display may show a positive number even when the fuel tank is empty.
Dealers are expected to begin reprogramming the fuel meter software in December, after they have been provided with the necessary tools, according to the National Highway Traffic Administration. Until then, Subaru advises owners not to allow the fuel level to drop below one-quarter tank.
Separately, Subaru is recalling 165,500 cars in the U.S. to replace engine valve springs that could break. That callback involves 4-cylinder engines in Subaru BRZ and Toyota Scion FR-S sport coupes, Crosstrek crossover vehicles and Impreza small sedans and wagons. Affected engines were built between January 2012 and October 2013.
