Subaru Inc. says it will recall nearly 2.3 million of its Impreza cars and Forester crossover vehicles to replace a switch that can make it impossible to start the engine.

The campaign targets 2009-2017 models. The company says 307,000 of the vehicles are in Japan, and the others are distributed in markets worldwide.

The problem lies with a faulty switch that illuminates the brake lights when the brake pedal is depressed. Subaru says a manufacturing process coated the switch’s electrical contacts.

The switch’s output also is used in the vehicle’s ignition-brake interlock system, requiring that the driver press the brake pedal before the engine will start.
