Subaru Corp. is debuting a water-resistant seating upholstery on upscale versions of the redesigned 2020 Outback midsize crossover vehicle.

Dubbed StarTex, the urethane-based blend is part of a two-tone trim package on the Outback Onyx Edition XT. Subaru says the lightweight material prevents moisture from soaking in, can be wiped clean and is more durable than cloth and leather.

The material contains no animal products, polyvinyl chloride, phthalate or chlorine. In addition, StarTex seats are soft to the touch and are partially made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate, Subaru says.

The sixth-generation Outback is built on Subaru’s flexible global platform. The Onyx XT model, which also features a variety of tech and styling upgrades, adds $8,200 to the base model’s $27,700 sticker.
