Subaru maker Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. has joined eight other carmakers in recalling vehicles equipped with faulty airbag inflators supplied by Takata Corp.
Subaru's recall in the U.S. covers about 8,600 of the brand's 3004 Impreza and 2003-2004 Baja, Legacy and Outback cars and crossovers sold nationwide.
The recalls target improperly manufactured Takata inflators that can explode and spray shrapnel into the passenger compartment. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has asked carmakers, many of whom conducted campaigns last year to fix the problem, to expand the recalls to include additional models in high-humidity regions.
Other carmakers involved so far in the new round of recalls are BMW, Chrysler, General Motors, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota.
