Los Angeles-based Thor Trucks Inc. aims to launch its ET-One semi-tractor in 2019—the same timeframe Tesla Inc. is targeting for its new electric Semi.

Thor, which was formed in early 2016 by a pair of 25-year-old entrepreneurs, built the ET-One from existing components. Based on a Navistar chassis with Dana axles, the truck is powered by an off-the-shelf electric motor from Hydro-Quebec’s TM4 unit. The battery pack was designed in-house, using LG Chem batteries.

The base $150,000 model will have a 100-mile driving range. A 300-mile variant also is in the works with a target price of $250,000. By comparison, Tesla is planning 300- and 500-mile trucks that start $150,000 and $180,000, respectively.

Thor says the prototype ET-One has hauled as much as 60,000 lbs, and it expects production models to be rated at 80,000 lbs. Several power configurations are planned, topping out at 700 hp.

Thor estimates the maintenance cost per mile electric truck will be 60% cheaper than current diesel-powered semis. Battery charging is expected to cost 70% less than diesel fuel.
