General Motors Co. will add a more powerful version of its Buick Encore small crossover this autumn with the top-end Sport Touring model.

Sport upgrades include a new direct-injection, turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 153 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque up 11% and 20%, respectively, from the Encore's base four-banger. The new engine, which also will be available in the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze small car, will be mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

To help boost fuel efficiency, the turbocharged mill gets an automatic stop-start system, a variable-flow oiling system, piston-cooling oil jets and low-friction piston rings. Aluminum pistons and a redesigned camshaft drive chain reduce noise and vibration, according to GM.

In addition to the performance upgrades, the Sport Touring model gets a rear spoiler, body-color door handles and 18-inch aluminum wheels. Options include a 120-volt power outlet, blind spot and rear-cross traffic alerts, and remote starting.
