U.K.-based Smith Electric Vehicles Corp., a maker of electric commercial vehicles, is partnering with Taikang Technology Corp. to make and sell its EVs in Taiwan.

The venture has agreed to assemble at least 5,000 EVs in the first three years, most of them electric garbage trucks for use in Taiwan. Initial production will carry Smith Electric's Newton and Edison brands.

The companies say their venture intends to open a new assembly plant in Taiwan. Smith Electric's trucks are designed for applications involving fixed routes that cover fewer than 100 miles per day.
