Smart Drops Pricing of ForTwo Coupe, Revives Convertible

Daimler AG’s Smart car unit is dropping the price of its ForTwo electric coupe in the U.S. by $1,200 to $24,500.
Due this summer, the 2017 two-seater will be joined by a convertible variant later this year. The drop-top will start at just under $29,000—the same price it stickered for when it was last available as a 2015 model.
The redesigned ForTwo EVs are roomier and boast more standard features than the outgoing coupe. The 17.6-kWh lithium-ion battery is carried over. But output of the electric motor has been boosted from 74 hp and 96 lb-ft of torque to 80 hp and 118 lb-ft. And the estimated driving range has increased to much as 80 miles from 68 miles for the outgoing model.
In February Smart announced it would stop selling gasoline-powered cars in North America to focus on all-electric models. Combined sales for the Smart ForTwo and the ForFour sedan in the U.S. fell 17% to 6,200 units last year and are off another 19% through the first four months of 2017, according to Autodata Corp. Global sales of the tiny city cars jumped 21% to nearly 144,500 units in 2016.
