European demand for small luxury SUV/crossover vehicles is likely to surpass a record 500,000 units this year and 600,000 in 2016, Automotive News Europe reports, citing forecasters.

The premium-small SUV market, a relatively new phenomenon, totaled only 270,000 units in Europe in 2010. Since then the number of available models has multiplied, and manufacturers are introducing more fuel-efficient engines to power them.

Europe's best-selling vehicles in the segment currently are the Audi Q4, Volvo XC60, BMW X1, Sufi Q5 and Range Rover Evoque, according to JATO Dynamics.
