A system that collects rainwater and pipes it into a vehicle's windshield washer reservoir has received the U.S. Patent Office's 9 millionth patent.

The apparatus developed by Jupiter, Fla.-based WiperFill Holdings LLC, collects rainfall from the base of the hood, filters it and blends it with concentrated cleaners and/or antifreeze before using it to top up the windshield washer system.

WiperFill is a convenience that offers environmental benefits in terms of recycling and distribution costs, according to the company. It is shopping for a partner to commercialize the device.
