Volkswagen AG’s SEAT unit says it hopes to add a small all-electric SUV in 2019.

CEO Luca De Meo tells Automotive News Europe the vehicle would share parent Volkswagen AG’s new modular MEB platform for EVs. VW finalized development on the special chassis a month ago.

If a market analysis confirms the viability and timing for the SEAT electric, the vehicle would debut before VW’s own electric-only compact car. That model, which will be based on the “I.D.” concept presented at last year’s Paris auto show, is due in 2020.

De Meo concedes it will be difficult to develop an electric SUV that is affordable for SEAT’s relatively young customer base, which averages 45 years old.
