Volkswagen AG's SEAT unit is preparing to introduce a mini-SUV/crossover vehicle in Europe by the end of 2017, a source tells Automotive News Europe.

The car, which is expected to ride on VW's "MQB" platform, will compete with the Fiat 300X and Renault Captur. ANE offered no other details about the upcoming model.

The report comes days after VW CEO Martin Winterkorn told Bild am Sonntag the group will introduce a range of low-cost vehicles, including an SUV/crossover, in China in 2018.
