Volkswagen AG's Scania unit has opened a second busmaking factory in India as part of a plan to double its truck and bus production capacity in the country to 7,500 units by the end of 2017.
The new facility in Narasapura has capacity to make about 1,000 ethanol-fueled Metro Link buses per year. The factory joins a $50 million plant Scania opened in Narasupura two years ago with annual capacity to assemble 1,000 buses and 2,500 commercial trucks.
Scania says the new bus plant will serve both India and markets in Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Scania entered the Indian market in 2007.
