An SAE International team says the European Union's newly mandated automotive refrigerant is safe and effective.
The group condemns tests to the contrary by Daimler AG as "unrealistic," Inappropriate" and "artificial."
Daimler declared last autumn that its own lab tests showed the material, called R-1234yf, could catch fire and form poisonous fumes in a crash. The company is continuing to use the industry's previous standard refrigerant, R-134A, in defiance of an EU directive that required a switch to the greener alternative.
The SAE team describes the risk of passengers being exposed to an R-1224yf fire is "exceptionally remote." It notes that Daimler's evaluation did not include actual vehicle collisions and ignored a host of factors that would reduce the likelihood of a fire.
The new refrigerant has a global warming potential rating of 4 compared with 1,430 for the older material. R-1234yf has been repeatedly deemed safe in three years of previous tests by SAE, carmakers and independent labs.
