Livonia, Mich.-based Roush Enterprises Inc.'s Roush Performance unit has launched a new active exhaust system that lets Mustang owners tune their car's exhaust note.

Available for 2015 Mustangs outfitted with Roush's Quad Tip exhaust system, the aftermarket sound device has three pre-loaded settings and a customizable function. Users can access the app and adjust exhaust settings from an Apple iPhone or iPad device.

The patent-pending application allows drivers to calibrate the tune and volume of their exhaust. Based on vehicle speed and accelerator position, the system automatically adjusts valve opening and closing positions depending on the mode selected.

The base Touring setting, designed for neighborhood cruising, routes all exhaust gases through the mufflers to keep output decibels to a minimum. The Sport option provides more exhaust noise at low accelerator openings and low vehicle speeds. During normal city driving, the exhaust valves close to reduce noise.

The Track setting bypasses the muffler for a full, unrestricted tone. Designed for the track, this mode is not street legal.

Drivers can view settings as 3-D graphical renderings on their iPhone or iPad and save multiple settings on their device.

Roush says its system uses an original equipment-grade valve that makes it superior to simple electronic cutouts. It claims competitive systems lack smart controls and can suffer from premature valve failure.
