BMW AG’s Rolls-Royce Motor Cars unit has publicly debuted the Cullinan, its first SUV/crossover vehicle, with a base price of about £250,000 ($338,000).
The ultra-luxury car will be the world’s most expensive production SUV when it goes on sale at the end of the year. A broad range of custom features can easily drive the price above $400,000.
Rolls-Royce touts the 563-hp, V-12-powered car as its most practical model. Prime markets are expected to be China, the Middle East and the U.S.
Riding on an aluminum chassis, the big five-seater features an air suspension with technology to sense and instantly respond to bumps, along with impressive off-road and water-fording capabilities. Second-row doors are hinged at the rear to enhance ingress and egress to the interior, which boasts a completely flat floor.
Tech features include night vision, wi-fi hot spot, head up display with surround exterior view, active cruise control and alerts for cross-traffic, collision, lane departure and lane change.
Inside, a glass partition isolates the passenger compartment from the rear cargo area. The feature maintains the desired climate within the cabin when the rear hatch is opened. The second-row bench seat can be folded down—a first for any Rolls-Royce vehicle—to expand cargo capacity. Or buyers can opt for a pair of fixed, ultra-luxury seats with center console and refrigerator.
The cargo compartment can be customized with “recreational modules” with sport-specific gear that stows in a motorized drawer. A pair of rear-facing “viewing seats” extend from the rear to provide perches for sightseeing or watching sporting events.
