Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV has rehired Roberto Fedeli, who will become chief technical officer for the company’s Alfa Romeo and Maserati units.

It’s not clear if this is a newly created position. Some media reports suggest Fedeli will replace former Alfa chief engineer Phillippe Krief, who is said to have left the brand earlier this week. Fedeli will report directly to Harald Wester, who is CEO of Alfa Romeo and Maserati and chief technology officer for FCA.

Fedeli spent 26 years at FCA’s Ferrari unit prior to joining BMW in late 2014 as a senior executive for the company’s technology and development operations. At Ferrari, where he was affectionately nicknamed “The Prince,” Fedeli headed the brand’s engineering, research and development efforts.

Described as an expert in lightweight materials, Fedeli’s credits include leading the development of the LaFerrari limited-edition hybrid and the 458 Speciale and FF supercars.

Among his first challenges in his new position will be launching the new Alfa Romeo Giulia midsize sedan and Maserati Levante SUV. Both models are behind schedule. The Giulia is being reworked after failing several recent crash tests, according to Automotive News Europe.
