Reports: Marchionne Was Seriously Ill for More than a Year

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne had been receiving treatment for a “serious” illness for more than a year before he died on Wednesday, says the Swiss hospital that treated him.
The hospital’s statement corroborates earlier comments by the father of Manuela Battezzato, Marchionne’s partner for the past decade, who told Italy’s Corriere della Sera that Marchionne had been “sick for a year.”
Marchionne reportedly suffered an embolism on July 20 during what was described as shoulder surgery, and slipped into a coma. FCA says it had no prior details about his health and wasn’t told he had become permanently incapacitated until the end of last week.
