Jaguar Ltd. will move its flagship XJ sedan to an all-electric propulsion system with the launch of the next-generation model later this year, Autocar reports.
The U.K. enthusiast magazine, which doesn’t cite its sources, says the new XJ will use two electric motors and provide a driving range of more than 300 miles. The all-new XJ also will feature a new aluminum chassis with a five-door layout and other styling updates that will be spread throughout the brand, according to Autocar.
Jaguar, which launched the original XJ in 1968, declined to comment on the new model. The XJ was last redesigned in 2009.
Last autumn Jaguar Land Rover announced plans to offer hybrid and all-electric powertrain options in all new cars and SUVs by 2020. The first Jaguar EV, the I-Pace crossover/SUV is due to bow in March.
Jaguar, which already competes in the Formula E electric car circuit, is launching an ancillary series this year. The one-make series, called I-Pace eTrophy, will feature race car variants of the electric crossover.
