Nissan Motor Co. is developing a hybrid version of its next-generation Juke compact crossover, Car and Driver reports.

A concept of the hybrid Juke will be unveiled in October at the Tokyo auto show, according to the enthusiast magazine, which doesn’t cite its sources. An all-new traditionally powered Juke, built on Renault-Nissan’s CFM-B modular architecture and modeled after the 2015 Gripz concept, is expected to bow later this year.

The hybrid variant will use the series hybrid layout employed by the Note e-Power subcompact car that was launched late last year in Japan, C&D says. The system teams a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine with a power generator and inverter.

Unlike the Chevrolet Volt and Toyota Prius Prime series, the Juke e-Power won’t come with a plug-in option, according to C&D. It says the Juke’s battery pack will be about 1/20th the size of the Leaf EV’s pack, with the engine serving as a generator for the battery.
