Mazda and Nissan have been urged by Japanese safety officials to quickly determine whether they should expand last year's recall of vehicles equipped with airbag systems that could explode, Reuters reports.
Last year the two companies along with BMW, Honda and Toyota recalled a combined 3.4 million vehicles worldwide to inspect and/or replace faulty airbag inflators supplied by Takata Corp.
Last week Toyota announced it will replace the inflators in an additional 650,000 vehicles in Japan and about 1.6 million vehicles in the U.S. whose airbag inflators were inspected but not replaced in last year's recall.
Reuters says Honda is about one week away from expanding its 2013 global recall of 1.1 million vehicles.
