General Motors Co. has dropped plans for a U.S. version of its next-generation Buick Verano small sedan, sources tell Automotive News. The car was introduced in China last year and was expected to debut in the U.S. in 2017.
AN says GM's decision to phase out the nameplate reflects weak U.S. demand for small cars. Buick predicts as much as 70% of its U.S. volume will be in crossovers this year, including the brand’s popular subcompact Encore model launched in 2013.
GM makes the U.S. version of the Verano at its underutilized Orion plant northwest of Detroit. The company sold 31,900 of the sedans in the American market last year.
