Report: FCA Developing Inline-6 to Replace Pentastar V-6

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is developing a turbocharged inline-6 engine that could be used across the carmaker’s brands, Allpar reports.
The FCA enthusiast site, which doesn’t cite its sources, says the powerplant will replace the venerable Pentastar V-6 (pictured) in a variety of next-generation models. Despite a reported displacement of less than three liters, the engine is expected to generate a Hemi-like 370 hp but with a smoother torque curve.
Allpar say the system will be an all-new design rather than building on FCA’s current inline 2.4-liter 4-banger. But the length of the six-cylinder is said to be within three inches of the smaller unit—thanks in part to small, closely spaced bores.
The inline-6 likely will bow in the 2020 Jeep Wagoneer SUV and the next-generation Grand Cherokee, according to the report. Among the other nameplates listed as candidates for the engine are Dodge Challenger and Charger muscle cars, Ram 1500 pickup and possibly unspecified Alfa Romeo and Maserati models.
The Dodge, Jeep and Ram applications likely would use a twin-scroll turbocharger, Allpar says. But a twin-turbo setup could be used for Alfa Romeo and Maserati.
