Germany’s KBA motor authority found that Daimler AG used five illegal devices to switch off emission controls in its most advanced Euro 6-spec diesels, Bild am Sonntag reports.
The newspaper says KBA believes the illegal software can be found in roughly 1 million Mercedes-Benz cars equipped with urea injection systems, which are used to neutralize nitrogen oxides in the exhaust. Reuters says the agency suspects the technology is being used to mask rather than control emissions.
A company spokesman declines to comment on the Bild report. But he repeats Daimler’s earlier objection to KBA’s position that switch-off devices are in violation of EU regulations. Those standards allow diesel maker to switch off emission controls under certain operating conditions to protect the engine. But critics say carmakers have abused that concession.
Last month KBA ordered Daimler to recall some 600,000 Vito vans equipped with 1.6-liter Euro 6 diesels because the engines are equipped with two illegal emission control devices.
