General Motors Co.’s upcoming mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette may get the same transmission that’s being fitted into Ford Motor Co.’s latest Mustang Shelby GT500, Road & Track reports.

The 2020 model GT500, which was unveiled earlier this month at the Detroit auto show, teams a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) with a 5.2-liter V-8 that’s expected to generate more than 700 hp. If true, the Corvette application would be GM’s first use of a dual-clutch transmission.

Mexico City-based Tremec Corp. is supplying the Ford transmission. The gearbox was developed in Belgium and is produced in Mexico, with final assembly in the U.S.

Tremec indicates in an employee newsletter that it is ramping up to supply 7-speed DCTs to both Ford and GM. Tremec received Fassler gear honing machines last year for the Corvette program and reportedly has had to modify them for the GT500. Tremec employees also have posted information about the two programs on social media.

GM has been tight-lipped about the C8 Vette, which was captured by spy photographers last autumn. The company is expected to introduce the highly anticipated model later this year.
