BMW AG would prefer to produce an all-electric version of its Mini small car at its main Mini factory in Oxford, England, than outsource the car to facilities in Europe, sources tell Reuters.
The company said in February that “uncertainty” caused by the U.K.’s decision to leave the EU could prompt it to make the EV in Europe. BMW already uses contract assembler VDL Nedcar BV to make piston-powered minis at the supplier’s factory in Born, Netherlands. That facility already makes a plugin hybrid version of the Mini.
Setting up Mini EV operations at a BMW factory in Germany is another option. But Reuters’ sources point out that establishing EV production in England would be important in the event that Mini eventually becomes an electric-only brand.
BMW, which says no final decision has been made, is expected to conclude its deliberations by year-end.
