Aston Martin Holdings Ltd. is developing an inline-six engine that will replace the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine the British company sources from Mercedes-AMG, sources tell Autocar.
The new six-cylinder mill could be derived from Aston Martin’s current 5.2-liter V-12 engine and bow in the upcoming DBX crossover vehicle, according to the report. In the DBX, which is due late next year, the smaller engine could be paired with a hybrid-electric system.
Aston Martin plans to offer hybrid powertrains throughout its lineup within 10 years.
Previous reports suggested Aston Martin was considering using a Mercedes-sourced 6-cylinder engine in the DBX. Mercedes teams that engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid system to reduce turbo lag.
Separately, Aston Martin uses the Mercedes-AMG V-8 in the DB11 and Vantage coupes. The powerplant also is expected to be offered in the DBX along with a V-12 and possibly the inline-six engine.
