Indian SUV maker Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. and Japanese chipmaker Renesas Electronics Corp. have agreed to collaborate on computer chips for electric vehicles, self-driving systems and other technologies.
Renesas initially will supply semiconductors to control the powertrain of Mahindra’s Formula E race car when the team begins its fourth season next year. Renesas will be the team’s official technology partner.
Renesas says the deal will give it access to a market with tremendous growth potential and help it gain new customers in emerging markets.
Mahindra, for whom EVs are a core business, says the partnership will help advance its capabilities in such areas as motors, inverter controls and battery management, and to accelerate its adoption of driver assist and self-driving vehicle systems.
